testing… one, two, three

…keeping up with tech

still exploring

there’s so much available in wordpress; it’s hard to decide where to work first. should i create new pages? should i edit my old website? i want to add to the posts i already have, and create a bit of perspective. with so many options, i find myself a little stymied.

what about the blogroll? i’d like to include links to so many different types of sites, it’s hard to just start listing them. it would be nicer to categorize the links, i think. there’s plenty of time… why do i feel i’m wasting it?

additions

so i’ve removed a few of the themes, so far, that i’m quite sure i won’t be using. and added a few plug-ins that look to be fairly useful. exploring the word press site has been very interesting. not exactly striving to learn everything right off the bat – but so far so good!

from the looks of it, i could conceivably do an entire site using wordpress alone. i almost wish i started with it in the first place. but since i didn’t, i’ll work on incorporating it into the site i have; i will try not to have too much overlapping information, that would be dull.

next step: adding to the blogroll…

updating blog…

going thru old posts, today. updating the categories (so everything doesn’t show up as “uncategorized”). interesting to me; i’ve noticed a consistent lack of information in my posts. i was so determined to not infringe on someone else’s privacy…

i think i really need to put in a little more information. at least describe the situations and what i’m doing about resolving issues. what type of project am i working on? what software am i using? what time frame is involved? is it a beginner’s issue, or something a little more complex? up ’til now, i’ve never even used categories…

it’s probably a good thing i haven’t been too consistant in the past — only 45 entries to edit (haha)

PNME

i made the decision this morning. i won’t be attending. i have this terror of crowds that leads to panic attacks; going alone to a convention is just too scary.

but i do recommend it to anyone interested in podcasting, video blogging, online video, the works! there are many session tracks available (beginners, monetizing, editing, content management…) and tons of dealers are going to be there. there’s a podcasting 101 camp the day before the convention starts, as well. for those who can’t attend (it’s in ontario, CA – sept. 28-30) the podcast brothers podcast is a good way to catch up on many of the events. i’m listening to that thru iTunes.

experiments

checking out varied themes and layouts. glad i know a little CSS. going to be changing this rather often over the next few days (weeks?) as i experiment with changes and such.

started by downloading quite a few themes from wordpress. as i look at each variation, i’ll be taking notes re: what i like, dislike, and definitely MUST keep. don’t expect much continuity for a few days. bits and pieces may pop in and out as i tweak the settings.

success!

wordpress has very good documentation. took all of 5 minutes to find an answer and apply it. old blogger files have been imported, and we’re ready to go!

so much for tech support

got an email noting that i seem to have fixed the permissions myself. nice of them to acknowledge there was a problem ticket out there (only took two weeks!)

wordpress is installed, and i can access everything just fine, now. going to try to import everything from this one, but not too worried if i don’t manage it. starting over is sometimes a good thing. my whole site needs revamping, anyway. did a little browsing around in the themes last night. there are a few that i quite like; might not have to do any editing. that will save a bit of time.

between trying out new technologies and house cleaning, i’m sleeping really well! i hate it when i start dreaming about boxes and code, though.

finally!

not that the webhost was any help. i took another stab at changing things, myself. specifically – i changed some of the file permissions in the file manager on the the site. tedious, it probably would have been easier if i could have run a batch-file, but i finally have access to the admin panel for wordpress! wordpress is finally working!

now, all i have to do is learn how to use it well. it certainly looks more robust than blogger. i understand i can import my old blogger, as well. hmm…

so far no luck. i guess i’m going to have to do a little more research into how it’s supposed to work. eventually, i should get it right. i’d hate to just abandon this. then again, it has been on the lame side, so far.

there’s a lot more to wordpress then there is here. going to enter an intense learning curve this week. hope to be completely switched over before the end of the month

oh, goody :(

i just found out that blogger is not really working correctly, after all. even after republishing the entire blog, the archives are inaccessible. “permissions” denied.

there really is something seriously wrong with my hosted site. and i’m really very peeved. got a recommendation for a new host last night, from someone who has had similar issues with my current host. definitely going to call up some details in the morning.

iPod Touch

i succumbed! 16GB version on order! it’s the perfect solution. everything i liked about the iPhone without having to switch to ATT or paying the $60/month data charges. i really like that. my current iTunes library is around 12GB; the whole thing will fit on the iPod Touch with room to spare for a lot of my photos. whee!

a side word, here. lots of people have complained about the HUGE price drop on the iPhone. it’s only logical. with the new iPod line out, there’s a huge conflict whether to buy the iPod or the iPhone. and it’s moot, now; Apple is splitting the difference with early adopters – $100 credit in the Apple store. Yeah, they could have priced it lower in the first place, but there IS a risk when you ruch out to buy the newest tech. it wasn’t the price that made me wait – it was ATT. with the iPod Touch, now i’m really happy i waited. maybe down the line i’ll buy the iPhone, but ATT’s got to get better, or the contract does, or the market’s got to open up (no exclusivity). have you noticed the ones yelling the loudest about the price drop are NOT the ones who bought it?

about the rest of the iPod lineup. 160GBs is really cool. i have a 60GB iPod video that i use primarily as a backup drive for my macbook. the new nano does look kinda fat, but it’s almost cute that way. and i love that the shuffle is now available in {product} red. might even get one, just because.
